Description of the Job

The Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU is in need of friendly, motivated, and outgoing individuals to assist in strengthening the ICA’s mission to circulate creative thought and ongoing critical discourse to serve on the Retail Team as a Retail Experience Associate! Please note that this is a temporary position with an official start date of March 10, 2018 and will conclude mid- September 2018.

The Retail Team is responsible for consistently delivering an inviting, educational and engaging experience to visitors of the ICA with the goal to sell products. Retail Experience Associates will be brand ambassadors of the ICA by supporting the shop’s mission to circulate creative thought and ongoing critical discourse. We will sell a range of curated products, including relevant art writing, art objects and exclusive product collaborations. You will be trained on how to use our point-of-sale software and maintain inventory standards.

What you’ll do:

- Engage with customers promptly, genuinely and with the goal of opening the conversation to ensure they feel welcome
- Translate product knowledge and exceed customer expectations
- Continuously think of ways to reinvent the retail experience
- Continuously update knowledge on exhibition material and store merchandise
- Ringing up customers through our point-of-sale software
- Effectively capture customer data
- Maintain merchandising standards, which includes restocking and tidying.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

- Must pass a pre-employment background check
- Customer service experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Must possess excellent customer service skills and a welcoming demeanor in order to successfully engage and interact with a diverse audience
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, and some holidays
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public
- Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy in discussing cultural diversity issues with the public

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

- Retail experience
- Cash handling experience
- Interest in art, marketing or merchandising
- Creative problem solver
- Pursuing a degree in Fashion Merchandising, Marketing, Fine Arts or a related field
- Customer service experience in hospitality, retail, or museum setting
