Description of General Responsibilities

The incumbent will provide advanced clinical and technical support for veterinary care of the Weil Institute of Emergency and Critical Care Research. Clinical support includes providing assistance with surgical procedures or independently performing surgical procedures following training from the Principal Investigator and/or senior staff. Use innovative approaches and broad biomedical training in animal manipulation, handling, and care. The incumbent will manage dedicated surgical space used for training individuals from a variety of educational backgrounds in hands on techniques involving a variety of species including both large animals (USDA regulated) and rodents. This includes scheduling, cleaning, proper record keeping, and equipment maintenance for all Weil-managed procedures. The incumbent will provide large animal anesthesia support training for research staff and visiting fellows on proper use of anesthesia and monitoring equipment. The incumbent will consult with the Laboratory and Research Manager as needed to augment protocol language. The incumbent will generate and maintain electronic and/or hard copy documentation, Standard Operating Procedures, policies and/or guidelines for all core responsibility areas as required by federal, state or local laws and guidelines and university policies (e.g., The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, The Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, USDA regulations, IACUC and the Division of Animal Care policies and guidelines) to meet federal, state and local laws and guidelines.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology, or equivalent training and/or experience. Incumbent must have a current license as a veterinary technician in the State of Virginia or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire.

This individual must be able to effectively interact with people from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds. The incumbent must be able to independently assess and resolve issues, and/or work in coordination/collaboration with others. The incumbent must be able to manage issues in a professional, courteous and confidential manner at all times.

Preferred Qualifications

Greater than 3 years of recent experience in clinical veterinary medicine, surgical support, and anesthesia is preferred. Knowledge of the University research rules and policies. Ability to conduct, test, draw conclusions, record and document findings.
