Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of ALT-Lab/Online@VCU is to broadly support faculty and academic units in their efforts to leverage technology to optimize student learning across a variety of delivery modes, on campus and off. The office provides strategic leadership in developing, expanding and enhancing VCU’s online learning programs and energizing the assessment and continuous quality improvement of current and new technology mediated courses and programs.

We are seeking a dynamic Director of Academic Operations and Administration to lead and support the growth of online academic programs and technology- enhanced learning at VCU. Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Director provides strategic leadership within the Office of Online Academic Programs and the Academic Learning Transformation Laboratory (ALT Lab), partnering with the Executive Director on decisions around planning, goal setting, and policy development. This position will directly manage all operational functions of the unit and coordinate a number of university programs/services that support the growth and success of online academic opportunities at VCU. The Director provides high level oversight of online program development and assessment and directly supervises a team of instructional designers, technologists, program liaisons, and media specialists. This role will have university-wide impact and must exercise independent judgment in areas such as programs and services, staffing, expenditures, and executing strategic priorities.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of Online@VCU, the Director of Operations will:

- Provide strategic administrative leadership to the Office of Online Academic Programs and Academic Learning Transformation Laboratory (ALT Lab)
- Serve as a strategic partner in planning, goal setting, and policy development around online learning
- Develop workflows for online program development, including curriculum development and coordination of business office processes across campus
- Design and implement a menu of faculty development offerings specific to web-enhanced, hybrid, and online teaching & learning as well as a system for evaluation of results
- Hire, train, and coach instructional design staff to deliver professional development offerings and ongoing support for faculty teaching web-enhanced, hybrid, and online courses
- Implement metrics for evaluation of instructional design staff, faculty support offerings, workflows, and return on investments
- Provide direct day to day management for a staff of instructional designers, technologists, program liaisons, and media specialists.
- Manage relationships with external vendors
- The Director will exercise independent judgment in areas such as programs and services, staffing, expenditures, and executing strategic priorities

Required Qualifications

- An advanced degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a related field is required.
- At least 5 years of leadership experience in online program development that includes curriculum design, faculty development, faculty support, employee supervision, and budget management.
- Designing and implementing online faculty development curricula
- Implementing online quality standard initiatives
- Documenting outcomes of faculty development programs
- Collaborating with academic units to redesign curricula for online delivery
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

- Collaborating with university staff on issues of admissions, coding, billing, financial aid, marketing, student services, etc.
- Tracking and reporting data on initiatives, budget, and ROI
- Advising academic units on new models of instruction such as MOOC degrees, credit for competency, credit for prior learning, etc.
- Designing, implementing, and evaluating both credit and non-credit distance education offerings
