Position Summary and Qualifications

The School of Education is committed to excellence in the initial preparation and continuing development of professionals for leadership, teaching, service and scholarly inquiry in culturally diverse settings across the life span.

The mission of the Partnership for People for Disabilities is “To partner with people with disabilities and others to build communities where all people can live, learn, work and play together.”

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This Associate Director will assist the Executive Director by taking leadership in all programmatic requirements of the organization’s core funding and project funding. This position also oversees training, technical assistance, and direct service functions. The Associate Director will collaborate with the Associate Director of Research to oversee program development, data collection, and report writing for the organization.

Position Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Associate Director of Research with meeting the requirements of the Core Grant

• Overseeing the development, evaluation and annual updating of the UCEDD five-year core grant along with the Leadership team.

• Develop grant proposals with high probability of success

• Develop and maintain own research/programmatic agenda.

• Serve as PI and manage grants and contracts, and develop and negotiate contracts.

• Serve as a resource for business operations as needed

• Assist with the hiring, supervising and evaluating staff as assigned.

• Provide technical assistance to disability and community services systems professionals/staff to promote systems improvements.

• Develop and maintain collaborations with national partners, state agencies, VCU and other regional universities, within the Partnership, community and self-advocacy organizations, local schools/school districts, individuals with developmental disabilities, family members and caregivers, etc.

• In collaboration with staff and partners, write, edit, and submit journal articles for publication, white papers, policy briefs, monographs, reports, fact sheets,
resource guides and other products for dissemination

• Develop and implement training and continuing education activities and present
topics of interests to a diverse audience of disability professionals, community professionals, policy makers and legislators, individuals with developmental disabilities, family members and caregivers.

• Conduct professional presentations at professional conferences.

• Represent the Partnership at meetings, councils, task forces, work groups, etc.

• Function as Acting Director during absence of the Director.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Supervise leadership level faculty and staff as needed

• Oversee social media for the organization as needed

Required Qualifications

• PhD or similar degree (EdD, PsyD) in related field, such as rehabilitation, public
health, public policy, education/special education, early childhood, psychology

• Working knowledge of disability services across the lifespan

• Significant experience in collaborating with people with disabilities, family members/caregivers, advocacy and provider groups, community organizations and state agencies

• A minimum of five years of leadership experience of a diverse team of employees (e.g. faculty, staff, trainees, students, employees with disabilities, family members of children/adults with disabilities, etc.)

• A minimum of five years of experience in developing and managing programs

• Evidence of successful grant proposal submissions and publication records

• Evidence of record of publications

• Experience with managing contracts and budgets

• Must be able to provide your own transportation for local/regional/state travel

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Excellent people skills, including working with a variety of individuals with varying backgrounds and abilities

• Ability to assess and respond appropriately to opportunities, challenges and conflicts

• Ability to analyze trends and needs in the disability field locally, regionally, statewide and nationally and apply knowledge to create/foster vision and strategic plan for the Partnership

• Ability to develop and manage budgets

• Ability to lead and work independently

• Excellent supervisory and leadership/team-building skills

• Ability to be diplomatic in interactions with constituents

• Ability to multi-task, work in fast-paced environment and under time pressure

• Ability to maintain high productivity and quality work with little supervision

• Must be able to travel and work outside of traditional business hours

Collaboration/Partnership Skills:

• Ability to initiate, foster and maintain contacts and partnerships with a variety of community and state agencies

• Ability to provide expertise and assistance to collaborators, policy makers, legislators, and service system professionals

Programmatic Skills:

• Ability to write successful grant applications

• Ability to develop, implement and evaluate programs, projects and activities

Computer/Technology Skills:

• Working knowledge of standard software programs (including Microsoft Office Suite)

• Working knowledge of electronic communications and social media

Training/Educational Skills:

• Ability to plan, implement and evaluate training, continuing education, workshops, seminars and conference sessions

• Ability to develop curricula

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in working with/for UCEDD/LEND Network and/or other national developmental disabilities networks

• Work experience with state or local governmental or non-governmental disabilities organizations
