Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Sociology Department at VCU is to provide an engaged, learner-centered experience for our undergraduate and graduate students through active involvement in faculty research and community development. The substantive focus of both curricula is one of social justice related to social inequality and sustainability within a global framework. We pay specific attention to issues related to inequality, digital sociology, gender violence, health disparities, work and labor markets and the social impacts of global environmental change.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Sociology Department in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking applications for one tenure track faculty position to begin August 2018. We are seeking candidates specializing in LatinX communities in the United States and quantitative methods. Preferred secondary specializations include social psychology, migration, health, globalization and/or urban sociology.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will include courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in their area of specialization, along with providing support to the program’s core curriculum and general education requirements. Candidates with the interest and ability to teach in our online Master’s program focused on Digital Sociology will be preferred.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include a PhD in Sociology in hand by August 2018 and a record of or demonstrable potential for excellence in scholarship. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Native- or near native proficiency in Spanish preferred as is potential for engaging students in research experiences in migrant communities both locally and abroad.
