Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The School of World Studies is a multidisciplinary unit, combining programs in Anthropology, Foreign Languages, International Studies and Religious Studies.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University embarks on a cluster hire in Migration Studies: Focus Latin America to enhance the study of Latin American migration at VCU and position the university as a thought leader in addressing the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly diverse nation. Four new faculty positions will enrich the departments of History, Sociology, Kinesiology and Health Sciences, and the School of World Studies, which seeks a practitioner/scholar to educate students and the public regarding matters of translation, interpretation, and inclusive communities and to train students in the art of translation and interpretation as central to the work of building inclusive communities.

Position Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will include:
Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Spanish/English translation and interpretation, with specialization in medical, community or related interpreting. Primary responsibilities include: contribute to development and delivery of curriculum relating to Spanish-English Translation & Interpreting certificate and interdisciplinary curriculum related to migration studies; liaise with community stakeholders to support internships, professional development activities, and other collaboration. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in national, state, College, and University-wide professional activities. Strong interpersonal skills are essential as collaboration and program advocacy across the university, local communities and beyond are a vital component.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include: PhD. in Translation/Interpreting, Spanish or relevant field; three years professional experience and appropriate certification in medical, community or related areas of interpreting; excellent writing, verbal and presentation communication skills in English and Spanish; demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. An established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the School of World Studies is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include: potential for developing and delivering professional development programming, particularly around ethical use of interpreters and issues of language access; potential for engaging students in research experiences in migrant communities both locally and abroad; and familiarity with interpreting accreditation expectations and procedures.
