Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Office of Planning and Decision Support is to provide leadership in ensuring that VCU is the most effective institution that it can be, support the work of decision makers at all levels within the university by developing appropriate metrics and providing information and analyses necessary to make data-driven decisions, meet the ongoing planning and evaluation needs of VCU, assess business practices for efficiency, effectiveness and accountability, and ensure that the university meets its statutory and voluntary reporting requirements in an accurate and timely fashion. To accomplish this mission, OPDS pairs analysis with decision making throughout the institution to identify information needed for decisions that are consistent with the university’s mission and strategic direction, and to ensure that decision makers have ready access to that information.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The core responsibility for the Data Integration and Quality Analyst is to provide technical support to the Office of planning and Decision Support (OPDS) in the identification, documentation and resolution of data quality issues related to business data usability; design, development and implementation of scalable cross functional (integrated) as well as institutional domain specific data marts that would make institutional data and information readily available to all stakeholders for informed decision making.

Position Responsibilities

The Data Integration and Quality Analyst will be a member of the Enterprise Analytics and Advanced Research team and will work closely and collaboratively with Data Access and Reporting team, data stewards, business analysts, report developers, subject matter experts and other stakeholders to implement modern data architectures of the highest quality needed to support the university’s analytics.
Key Responsibilities of the Data Integration and Quality Analyst as follows;
• Gather, clarify, and translate business and data requirements into documentation and conceptual design from which technical solutions are developed.
• Define data validation rules in the data models.
• Work with Data Architects to implement scalable data models for various Institutional domains such as Student, Finance, Human Resources, Research, Development and Alumni Engagement, etc.,
• Build ETL framework and processes to integrate data from disparate systems.
• Adapt ETL processes to accommodate changes in source systems and to respond to changes in business requirements.
• Work collaboratively with business analysts, systems analysts and data stewards to understand user requirements for data, data access and use permissions.
• Work collaboratively with systems admins/analysts and subject matter experts to identify and understand source systems.
• Create streamlined, scalable integration solutions to support BI and analytics environment.
• Develop metadata that is both business relevant and maps to existing data elements.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in Master Data Management initiatives.
• Mentor BI Analysts on ETL and Data Quality Management tools and processes.
• Deliver documentation on ETL processes, data validation and profiling, metadata, and master data management standards.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in computer science, information systems / technology or related field or equivalent work experience
• Several years of experience in designing, developing and deploying data marts and maintaining business and data validation rules.
• Several years of experience with Business Intelligence platforms from an integration and development perspective. SAS EBI or SAS Visual Analytics preferred
• Superior Proficiency in SQL including writing advanced SQL scripts, queries, reading query plans, tuning indexes, and troubleshooting performance issues.
• Demonstrated experience with data models, database design development, data profiling, and data quality tools
• Experience with the full Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) or Agile, specifically requirements definition and testing
• Several years of ETL experience in framework design, implementation, and management.
• Several years of experience working with stakeholders to gather business as well as technical requirements and effectively communicating complex structures in a simple fashion
• Significant Experience in data mining and data profiling
• Knowledge of data, master data and metadata management related standards, processes, and technologies
• Knowledge of what constitutes best practice in data and information management (data governance) and data quality controls
• Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, communication, critical thinking, analytical, and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and maintain documentation including processes using diagrams, charts, and narrative text.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills;
• Effective customer service skills;
• Strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to take initiative when working independently and yet work effectively in a team environment with people who have a diverse array of experiences and backgrounds
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU
• Familiarity with information management and higher education data architecture is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Desirable Experience and Skills:

Experience with higher education data and ERP systems (particularly Ellucian Banner)
