Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Office of Planning and Decision Support is to provide leadership in ensuring that VCU is the most effective institution that it can be, support the work of decision makers at all levels within the university by developing appropriate metrics and providing information and analyses necessary to make data-driven decisions, meet the ongoing planning and evaluation needs of VCU, assess business practices for efficiency, effectiveness and accountability, and ensure that the university meets its statutory and voluntary reporting requirements in an accurate and timely fashion. To accomplish this mission, OPDS pairs analysis with decision making throughout the institution to identify information needed for decisions that are consistent with the university’s mission and strategic direction, and to ensure that decision makers have ready access to that information.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Senior Institutional Research Analyst – Faculty Information Analyst has primary responsibility of supporting institutional faculty recruitment, retention and development-related strategies through predictive modeling; providing analytical support and reporting on academic personnel matters related to compensation, workforce planning; and faculty planning related research, including workload and productivity, research output, promotion and development. This position reports to the Executive Director of Enterprise Analytics and Advanced Research within OPDS.

Position Responsibilities

• Serve as a member of the Enterprise Analytics and Advanced Research team that is responsible for reporting and analytics associated with institutional planning and decision support;
• Collect, extract and analyze programmatic data from both internal and external data sources and determine factors affecting faculty recruitment, retention, development and satisfaction;
• Identify trends and opportunities in faculty staffing prepare high-level reports that support fact-based informed decision making;
• Work closely with the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Office of Faculty Recruitment and Retention to support institutional faculty planning and management needs;
• Interact regularly and work closely with academic units to support unit-specific faculty planning needs;
• Support institutional initiatives and priorities that leverage collaborative research and transdisciplinary core development for faculty recruitment and retention via predictive modeling;
• Assist in preparing presentations of data to support strategic and operational planning and decision making; and
• Prepare IPEDS, AAUP, CUPA-HR, U.S. News and World Report, Peterson’s Guide, Princeton Review and other surveys for external reporting.
• Create and maintain statistical models for faculty life cycle and use those models to simulate the effect of proposed changes to university practice, as well as to make short-term and long-term faculty workforce projections based on explicit assumptions;
• Create and maintain effective yield models for faculty recruitment and retention, and provide interval estimates of faculty retention and turnover;
• Model multiyear strategies that enable the university to target and allocate funds in support of interdisciplinary research and collaboration, faculty development and mentorship programs.
• Initiate, define, develop, and produce original research projects addressing faculty planning questions and issues;
• Develop and implement research methodologies, including: (1) Quantitative—identification and design of appropriate quantitative measures and instruments; survey design, deployment and analysis; benchmarking; and statistical modeling—and (2) Quasi-experimental studies to determine program impact and efficacy;
• Based on research and data analysis, contribute significantly to discussions regarding diversity and inclusion in the context of faculty recruitment, retention and promotion-related concerns;
• Attend and present at both regional and national conferences on various faculty planning-related topics; and
• Serve on data, research, and IT-related campus and university-wide committees.

Other Duties:
• Create and maintain faculty planning-related business intelligence solutions, procedures and standards within the Office of Planning and Decision Support and
• Represent the Executive Director of Enterprise Analytics and Advanced Research at meetings and other events related to enrollment planning as requested.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in statistics, computer systems, business administration or other research-intensive social sciences or equivalent work experience. Ph.D. preferred
• Experience in institutional research with particular respect to federal and state reporting (e.g., IPEDS, SCHEV), accreditation reporting (e.g., Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC)) and institutional profile, ranking and guidebook surveys such as AAUP, CUPA, US NEWS & World Report, Peterson’s Guide, College Board, Princeton Review etc.;
• Subject matter experience in more than one subject domain (e.g. admissions, enrollment, financial aid, employee, finance, development, sponsored research)
• Detailed understanding of extracting data from a relational databases, then manipulating, analyzing, interpreting and reporting data and information for strategic decision making;
• Experience using statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, STATA or R); demonstrating experience and facility with reporting to produce high quality reports and analysis;
• Experience with Oracle SQL, and Oracle databases;
• Knowledge of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as Ellucian Banner, Datatel, PeopleSoft or SAP;
• Experience with regression analyses, decision trees, neural networks;
• Excellent organizational and time management skills;
• Effective customer service skills;
• Strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills;
• Ability to take initiative when working independently and yet work effectively in a team environment with people who have a diverse array of experiences and backgrounds
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU.
