Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department Biochemistry & Molecular Biology falls into two important categories: teaching and research. We address important research problems and provide high quality opportunities for our pre-and postdoctoral trainees. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are the underpinnings of modern biomedical science and our Department provides this background for all trainees at VCU, regardless of the direction the future may take them.
The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology prepares students for successful careers as independent investigators in biomedical sciences and the biotechnology industry. The Department endeavors to maintain a graduate student-faculty ratio of 2:1. A wide variety of classes and seminars are offered, and the Departmental resources are enriched through a broad range of collaborations with adjunct faculty, and close ties with other departments and the private sector. This provides access to a spectrum of state-of-the-art technology, thus supporting research in diverse areas. The Department had a major expansion begin in 2002 with the recruitment of new faculty, now has research efforts of international stature in several multi-disciplinary research areas in cellular and molecular biology, signaling, metabolism, inflammation, and cancer. The Department is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, the Department faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Virginia Commonwealth University-School of Medicine (VCU-SOM) is seeking an exceptional investigator pursuing innovative questions relevant to the Department’s research strengths in lipids, metabolism, lipid signaling, protein:lipid interactions, lipidomics, and metabolomics. Candidates should have a PhD or MD/PhD with an outstanding research record and will be considered at a rank based upon qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. As promoted by VCU, the faculty member should also demonstrate experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. Leadership positions are available in the Department and the Massey Cancer Center for an outstanding individual with suitable qualifications. Substantial start up and salary packages are available. The Department belongs to a very active community of investigators and is committed to providing an outstanding research environment.

Position Responsibilities

1. Teaching
The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the areas relevant to their expertise. Possible course assignments may include but are not limited to: MI Medical Biochemistry; BIOC503/BIOC504; BIOC602; BIOC604. In addition, faculty will mentor research projects of graduate students who are registered for BIOC697.

2. Research
Faculty member should have a nationally recognized research program with an established record of publication in high-impact journals and success in securing external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at VCU. In addition, they will mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in their research laboratory.
3. Service
Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a closely related discipline.
• Nationally recognized research program in an area related to the departments mission with an established record of publication in high-impact journals and success in securing external funding.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level in biochemistry or a related discipline.
