The Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & Innovation (iCubed) at VCU builds human capital across the university and community. It connects multiple disciplines and lived experiences through the creation of transdisciplinary cores, which are university-community partnerships that endeavor to solve problems that disproportionately affect populations in urban areas.

The School of Nursing offers academic programs to educate nurses from entry level practice through the doctorate — all with the mission of improving health and the human condition through nursing research, education and service. The school enrolls an average of 900 students and is located on the MCV Campus in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The comprehensive health sciences environment includes a partnership with VCU Medical Center, a Level I trauma center with Magnet status. Faculty members include both expert nurses who maintain their clinical practices and nurse scientists renowned for cutting-edge research designed to advance nursing knowledge. Their work has consistently ranked the VCU School of Nursing in the top tier of National Institutes of Health-funded nursing schools.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & innovation (iCubed), and the School of Nursing seek applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-eligible position in the Health and Wellness in Aging Populations Transdisciplinary Core. The chief purpose of this core is to address problems of older and disabled adults “aging in place” within low income senior housing apartment buildings and surrounding neighborhoods in Richmond, Virginia. Collectively, the core will nurture communities to enhance the social and health aspects of older adults’ daily lives; it will address social determinants of health and health disparities facing the population, which is primarily African-American and low-income. The core also will collaborate with health professionals, academics, urban planners, policy experts, and community housing experts to develop a sustainable program of research, education, and service delivery that will translate to the community at large.

Position Responsibilities

The tenure-eligible faculty member will join the Health and Wellness in Aging Populations Transdisciplinary Core contributing 75% effort to this core primarily in research, service and education with remaining effort committed toward Family and Community Health Nursing.

The faculty member will serve as teaching and research faculty within the School of Nursing. They will share a deep commitment to effective instruction, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development related to the core. They will demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests, especially in the context of didactic or experiential teaching of nursing and/or interprofessional trainees.

The faculty member will be expected to contribute to VCU’s national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high quality publications, citations, and national recognition as through honorific awards) and maintain active involvement in national or international organizations and bodies. Scholarship activities will be focused on systematic reviews, observational studies, and health service outcomes evaluation while service will be a composite of departmental, school, university, national and international activities.

The faculty will broaden participation among members of under-represented groups. They will demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools.

Required Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in performance as a community-based health science researcher with a focus on health disparities/vulnerable populations.
• An established research agenda to the level of assistant professors, and a clear potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department; or, an established research / scholarship portfolio commensurate to the level of associate professor, as evidenced by high impact publications, external funding, and multidisciplinary application to underrepresented ethnic minorities.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• A registered nurse with a PhD or post-graduate research training in health services or outcomes research is preferred.
• Academic, research and / or professional experiences with urban and other underserved populations
• Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional service that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, age, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability.
