Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of The Office of Disability Support Services (soon to be Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity), is to assist Virginia Commonwealth University in creating a learning, living and social environment where all students have equal access to every aspect of the University’s programs, services, and activities. DSS serves as a strategic campus partner to aid in removing barriers to access and ensuring inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities. We do this through partnerships with students, faculty, and staff to promote student’s independence and to ensure the recognition of students’ abilities, not the impact of their disabilities.

The Office of Disability Support Services is located on the Monroe Park Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). VCU is a premier urban, public research university focused on academic success. The university is located in Richmond, Virginia, the Commonwealth’s Capital. VCU enrolls over 31,000 students.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Office of Disability Support Services is currently searching for an Assistant Director, to aid the Director in providing leadership and oversight within the office. The primary focus of this position will be overseeing the determination and provision of academic accommodations and establishing innovative initiatives to provide learning supports for students registered with the office.

Position Responsibilities

Administration: Provides support in developing annual and long range goals and objectives for the department.

Develops and conducts assessment of programs and services. Reviews and makes recommendations for the revision of departmental programs, policies and procedures. Ensures a broad range of services for students with disabilities which are continuously evaluated for improvement.

Technical Expertise: Evidences expertise in understanding the range and scope of disabilities and the needs of this population at the university. Determines best practices related to academic accommodations, auxiliary services, accessible furniture, universal design, and assistive technology. Aids in identifying and eliminating potential and real barriers to accessibility.

Program Development: Works with DSS and other university offices to develop, promote, implement and assess new learning support, educational, and social programs for student with disabilities. Consults with university departments to ensure all programs are accessible and inclusive to individuals with disabilities.

Personnel Management: Supervises and evaluates full-, part-time, and/or student worker DSS staff, as assigned.

Compliance: Assists in ensuring compliance with all federal and state laws. Evidences knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act Sections 504 and 508, guidance from the Office of Civil Rights and the Department of Justice guidelines, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and other applicable guidelines. Follows emerging legal and regulatory issues and trends.

Technology: Familiar with assistive technology best practices. Utilizes social media to communicate with students.

University Involvement: Provides consultation, training and technical assistance to faculty, staff and administration related to the needs of students with disabilities. Attends Student Affairs and University meetings to represent the interests of students and Disability Support Services. Involved with various Division and University committees and projects. Establishes working relationships with University departments, student groups and community partners.

Miscellaneous: Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director of DSS.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work Higher Education Administration or related field.

- 5+ years direct experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological and/or other disabilities in a higher education or clinical setting.

- Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and training for entry-level staff and/or student workers.

- Working knowledge and/or field experience interpreting and applying the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in a university setting.

- Experience reading and interpreting psychological, psychiatric, medical, and educational documentation.

- Demonstrated ability to determine eligibility for services and reasonable accommodations in an academic setting.

- Experience providing academic coaching and learning/social skills supports for individuals with a broad range of disabilities.

- Familiarity with educational and assistive technologies related to accessibility.

- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
