Description of General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the ICA’s Chief Curator, the Curatorial Production Manager will work closely with the rest of the curatorial team and key ICA leaders including the Director of Facilities, Installation, and Exhibition Design and Assistant Director of Facilities and Administration; as well as other ICA staff, guest curators and the Director of the ICA as needed. The Curatorial Production Manager will provide vital leadership and logistical expertise needed to ensure that the ICA’s curatorial programs are produced on schedule, on budget, and in support of the ICA’s mission and strategic goals. The position serves as a connector and liaison among key ICA staff as well as external stakeholders involved in exhibition production, and will be the lead project manager for some curatorial projects and exhibitions. The position is critical to the advance planning, effective coordination, and implementation of exhibition and curatorial programming at the ICA.

NOTE: This is a full-time, 1 year appointment to support the ICA’s Curatorial and Exhibitions Departments during the critical inaugural year of programming.

Responsibilities include:

Project Management-
- Working closely with Chief Curator and Director of Facilities, Installation, and Exhibition Design, develops and oversees near- and long-term timelines and production plans for ICA exhibitions and other curatorial projects.
- Serves as central liaison among ICA staff who are involved in producing exhibitions and curatorial projects and ensures effective overall coordination and production of artists’ projects including commissions, performances, participatory and community-based projects at the ICA and off-site.

Personnel Management-
- Manages the work of external contractors, volunteers, and temporary project support staff as needed. Will often be overseeing teams working on multiple projects on different timelines, so coordinates as needed across teams, and ensures strong communication back to Chief Curator and other ICA staff.
- Conceptualizes, implements, and oversees substantive curatorial/exhibitions internship program for VCU students, in alignment with other ICA needs and in collaboration with Associate Director of Academic Programs.

Administrative Support-
- Provides strategic research, planning and administrative support to curatorial team as needed.
- Working closely with Chief Curator, maintains advance exhibition calendar and helps oversee curatorial budget planning and management.
- Serves as primary curatorial liaison to ICA administration and finance team.
- Performs some registration duties in support of Interim Registrar.

Publication Assistance-
Working closely with the relevant curator, serves as publication manager for curatorial publications.

Required Qualifications

-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU is required.

-Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in art history, art, museum studies, curatorial studies, or arts administration or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of college and related experience

-Several years previous experience in a similar position at an institution dedicated to the visual arts, preferably one with a contemporary focus and/or an educational mission, or equivalent experience in a related field.

-Flexibility and willingness to perform a wide range of tasks as necessary with the ability to use good judgment, problem solve and work independently in a changing and multi-tasking environment with numerous competing deadlines.

-Familiarity with contemporary art and artistic practices, as well as deeply enthusiastic about working with artists, performers, curators, and exhibition designers.

-A deep commitment to the cultivation and presentation of contemporary art.

-Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and responsiveness, and must possess a welcoming, professional, and polished demeanor.

-Ability to develop professional relationships in all aspects of the position that result in stable, consistent, reliable, and courteous communication.

-Ability to problem-solve using sound judgment and professional discretion.

-Organized and detail-oriented with a demonstrated strong work ethic and time management skills.

-Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

-Knowledge of office practices and procedures, and excellent computer skills.

-Ability to interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with University, State, and school policies, procedures, and guidelines.
