Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The Department of Biology of Virginia Commonwealth University is dedicated to
undergraduate and graduate education and to research and service. Major
concentrations of expertise are in molecular and cellular biology, physiology, genetics,
and terrestrial and aquatic ecology.
The Department prepares undergraduate and graduate students for further academic
study in a variety of areas: admission to professional schools such as medicine,
dentistry, veterinary medicine and allied health programs; for employment in laboratory
and field programs in private industry or government agencies; for graduate programs; and for teaching in secondary schools. The Department also provides introductory courses that enable students throughout the University to explore and fulfill the science requirement of their degrees, thereby providing them with a solid foundation in the biological sciences.
Additionally, the Department is committed to a high level of furthering the knowledge
base throughout the many disciplines within the field of biology through research and
other scholarly activity. As part of its mission, the Department will also provide service
activities to assist and develop the educational and scientific base of the University, regional and national communities.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

Enhance department scholarship through research, publish manuscripts, and submit grant proposals for extramural funding. In addition to teaching responsibilities, employee will directly develop research skills for undergraduate and graduate students so they can be engaged in scholarly activities.

Position Responsibilities

Teach one upper level UG or G course each semester in plant ecology and coastal ecology. Perform coastal ecology research in barrier island systems along the North American Atlantic coast. Mentor UG, MS, and PhD students. Submit research proposals. Contribute to department service.

Required Qualifications

PhD required. Postdoctoral experience required. Teaching experience required. Experience working across scales ranging from the organismal to landscape using laboratory studies, fieldwork, and remote sensing. Strong record of graduate and undergraduate research mentoring. Demonstrated course development and instruction including undergraduate and graduate-level plant ecology and coastal ecology. Demonstrated the potential to secure funding for research. We seek applicants with lived experiences,

Preferred Qualifications

Strong background in plant physiological ecology. Research focus on barrier island systems along the North American Atlantic coast
