Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The Center for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering (CERSE) is a research-related center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) designed to foster interdisciplinary research, innovation, collaborative potential, and resource development in the field of rehabilitation (e.g., rehabilitation medicine, allied health, engineering, social work, education, etc.). The mission of CERSE is to (a) provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia and (b) improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by © maximizing independence in living skills, recreation and employment activities through (d) innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care. The center has a rich history of developing funded research programs, producing new knowledge, and innovating clinical practice in the rehabilitation sciences.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The successful applicant for the position of Executive Director would be expected to (a) contribute to education initiatives associated with CERSE, (b) develop research programs, resources, and research-related infrastructure, © manage the center’s daily operations, (d) cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships within the institution and among community partners, and (e) advocate for the best interests of individuals living with disabilities and their supportive communities.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching
• Teach grand rounds or in other venues as required by Chair.
• Provide mentorship and coordination of PM&R resident and fellow research projects

Research
• Direct CERSE activities in order to support and enhance VCU’s reputation as an internationally recognized leader in neuroscience, neurotrauma, engineering and rehabilitation research
• Engage in independently-funded neuroscience, neurotrauma, engineering or rehabilitation research
• Lead all CERSE outreach activities in the School of Medicine (SOM) and other Schools at VCU for the purposes of securing funded research contracts/grants
• Successfully collaborate with CERSE colleagues on application and execution of funded research projects
• Lead all CERSE outreach activities for community relations (e.g. industry-sponsored research and consortia with other universities, hospitals and clinics) and the securing of funded research contracts/grants
• Publish in quality journals at a level consistent with professional history
• Consult with CERSE researchers, faculty and residents on matters of research design, statistics, human subjects, substance abuse, ADA and vocational rehabilitation

Service
• Mentor Department faculty to improve research and grant expertise
• Serve on committees on Promotion and Tenure, Recruitment/Hiring, School or University level as required by the Chair
• Represent the interest of individuals with disabilities in association with various community agencies or advocacy groups

Clinical
• This position is not clinical. It is expected that the position will support the research, teaching, and service of other affiliated clinical faculty members.

Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.)
• Prepare reports for the Dean of the SOM and the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR), including annual reports, annual budget presentations, and other documents as requested
• Represent VCU and CERSE at regional, national, and international meetings and conferences
• Ensure compliance of CERSE programs with institutional and regulatory standards
• Maintain open, responsive, and effective communication among individuals affiliated with CERSE and community partners—including effective communication of concepts to individuals with varying degrees of familiarity with research-related activity

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D./ M.D. in rehabilitation, psychology, engineering or related discipline; or equivalent experience
• Minimum of seven years of independent programmatic, published research
• Manifest grant writing skills, including achievement as principal investigator on Federal grant
• Eligible of rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
• Familiarity with military culture and Veterans rehabilitation

Preferred Qualifications

• Funding history with NIDDLR, DARPA, CDMRP, NIH or similar Federal funding sources
• Collaborative research agenda, including publications crossing lines of both psychosocial rehabilitation and physical medicine
