Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the School of Nursing is to improve health and the human condition through leadership in nursing research, education and service. Therefore we will:

• Sustain our tradition of leadership in educational excellence by preparing future scholars and leaders for nursing and health care.

• Be a leader in improving health and the delivery of healthcare through the development, translation and dissemination of science in biobehavioral and in quality and safety research.

• Be a national model for collaboration and partnerships between nursing education and nursing service in academic medical centers.

• Be a national model for clinical scholarship (development and dissemination) in the use of simulation, technology and innovation for best practices in education and practice.

• Provide services that benefit the profession and promote the health and wellbeing of diverse individuals, families, and communities.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Director of the Clinical Learning Center will lead the integration of simulation throughout the academic programs of the School and will lead new initiatives to facilitate recognition as a national model in the use of simulation. The Director will also expand the collaborative efforts throughout the academic health sciences center. As a full time faculty member with 50% effort as the Director of the Clinical Learning Center, she/he should have research interests in simulation that complement and expand existing expertise in the School. This faculty member will also support the School with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. The Director reports directly to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Position Responsibilities

• Administrative:
o Direct the Clinical Learning Center, including fiscal accountability.
o Manage the Center’s personnel.
o Demonstrate annual achievements in performance consistent with rank

• Teaching:
o Lead curricular integration of state-of-the-art instructional technologies/simulation throughout the academic programs of the School and with IPE initiatives.
o Design and implement educational programs for faculty development in use of clinical simulation and innovations in clinical education.
o Teach in undergraduate and/or graduate programs

• Research/Scholarship:
o Seek grant funding to support innovative simulation initiatives.
o Demonstrate scholarship in the area of simulation and/or clinical learning

• Service:
o Serve as the School of Nursing expert for simulation within the academic health sciences campus and with nursing education/service colleagues at the state and national levels.
o Serve on School of Nursing and University committees and Professional Organizations, as appropriate

Required Qualifications

o Licensed or eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in Virginia.

o Doctoral degree, research or clinical practice focused.

o At least one graduate degree in Nursing.

o Demonstrated effectiveness as a clinical educator, including development and use of clinical simulation.

o Evidence of leadership in implementing innovation and technology.

o Ability to plan, implement and evaluate complex systems and tasks.

o Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to work cooperatively with others.

o Demonstrated experience and commitment to working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment.

o Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level in Nursing.

o Evidence of effective supervision of staff.

o Record of internal or external funding or proposal submissions to obtain funding.

Preferred Qualifications

o Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification

o Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) certification

o Experience in program grant development and management
