Description of General Responsibilities

• Responsible for the day to day operation and oversight of the USHS laboratory.
• Provides patient care the is within the scope of practice of a medical lab technician (MLT).
• Manages the proficiency testing of clinical staff 3 times a year.
• Trains new staff for laboratory responsibilities as well as current staffing updates as indicated.
• Attends at least 6 in-services offered by Student Health annually.
• Monitors for trends and shifts in laboratory results on an ongoing basis and reports problems to the lab director.
• Provides quality control on all laboratory equipment per manufacturer recommendations

Required Qualifications

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential. Computer skills and the ability to use a microscope and laboratory test kits. Knowledge of college health, adolescent medicine, women’s health, and immunizations. Ability to function independently and demonstrate initiative. Ability to perform venipuncture.
Certification in Virginia as a Medical Technologist (MLT). Extensive knowledge and experience with Proficiency testing, CLIA, OSHA, and AAAHC standards. Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as MT or MLT in an ambulatory setting, preferably a college setting.
• Certification as a clinical lab scientist through ASCP preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science or equivalent training and/or experience
