Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

Children’s Hospital of Richmond of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System has committed itself to transforming the NICU into a model academic unit devoted to excellence in clinical care, teaching, and clinical, translational, and basic research in Neonatal disease and service delivery.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Division is seeking a full-time academic Neonatologist with specific interest and experience in neonatal medicine training, education, and mentorship. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, dynamic leader with a record of scholarly activity within the area of education and career development. The candidate would assume the role of Fellowship Program Director, developing further the fellowship training program aided by a program coordinator and an Associate Program Director. Clinician-educator who will provide a mix of direct clinical care, clinical administrative and QA/QI activities, didactic and bedside teaching for students, residents and fellows, and pursuit of a plan of academic efforts that may include research or other activities that meet the needs of the unit and the individual.

Position Responsibilities

Expected responsibilities include clinical care, neonatal follow-up, ECMO, hypothermia treatment, teaching responsibilities as well as opportunity to continue established clinical or bench research.

Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the NICU. Faculty member will provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, Residents, Chief Residents, and Fellows when applicable.

Faculty member will have working knowledge in basic research methods and be able to participate in clinical, translational, and outcomes research.

Faculty member will serve on departmental or School of Medicine level committees when appropriate, and engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations, etc.

Faculty member will serve as a Neonatologist for the Department of Pediatrics. Will work weekends and take call as necessary.

Required Qualifications


• Board certified in Pediatrics and Neonatal medicine
• Experience with clinical care of patients
• Experience in an academic medical center
• Experience with research and research methods
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications


NPR certification
• Research focus and/or external funding
• Demonstrated excellent teaching skills
