Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The Center for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering (CERSE) is a research-related center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) designed to foster interdisciplinary research, innovation, collaborative potential, and resource development in the field of rehabilitation (e.g., rehabilitation medicine, allied health, engineering, social work, education, etc.). The mission of CERSE is to (a) provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia and (b) improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by © maximizing independence in living skills, recreation and employment activities through (d) innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care. The center has a rich history of developing funded research programs, producing new knowledge, and innovating clinical practice in the rehabilitation sciences.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The research quality, methodology, and innovation scientist for CERSE will provide expert consultation to physicians and PhD researchers to develop research programs and grant proposals; evaluate and strategically expand existing research programs; and facilitate innovation and use of best design and methods in treatment, diagnostic, prognostic, and systematic review studies. This person will work closely with physicians, PhD researchers as well as graduate students and residents from numerous disciplines in Medicine, Engineering, Allied Health as well as other Schools at VCU. The expert consultant must have the ability to communicate and teach the use of best research methods, evaluate research quality and provide feedback in a constructive manner, facilitate the use of meaningful knowledge transfer strategies, and thrive working on multiple consultations across disciplines.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching
• Teach grand rounds or other venues as required by the CERSE Executive Director.
• Provide mentorship and coordination of PM&R resident and fellow research projects Research
• Provide research expertise on CERSE activities to support and enhance VCU’s reputation as an internationally recognized leader in neuroscience, neurotrauma, engineering, and rehabilitation research
• Provide subject matter expertise and consultation on the design and methodological development of studies, evaluation of research literature, quality review and editing of grant proposals, research manuscripts, and other scholarly publications.
• Engage in and facilitate independently-funded neuroscience, neurotrauma, engineering or rehabilitation research
• Collaborate with CERSE colleagues to facilitate innovation, use of best methods and quality implementation and execution of funded research projects
• Publish in quality journals at a level consistent with professional history
• Work closely with departmental and center administration to assure successful completion and submission of grant applications.
Service
• Mentor Department faculty to improve research and grant expertise in association with various community agencies or advocacy groups
Other
• Represent VCU and CERSE at regional, national, and international meetings and conferences

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. The position requires a doctoral degree in research methodology, bio-statistics, statistics, or a closely related field, e.g., behavioral sciences with strong training and experience in research design and methodology
• Minimum of three years of independent programmatic, published research
• Experience in grant writing , including participation on Federal grants
• Experience in working in multi-disciplinary research situations
• Ability to collaborate, communicate and/or provide constructive consultation with department and CERSE staff at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

• Funding history with NIDDLR, DARPA, CDMRP, NIH , AHRQ or similar Federal funding sources
• Experience with clinical trials
• Collaborative research agenda, including publications crossing lines of both psychosocial rehabilitation and physical medicine
