Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

Our mission is to provide high-quality, cost-effective pathology services in a manner that supports the patient care, education, and research missions of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and School of Medicine.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

Provide medical and technical expertise to the Hematopathology Laboratory of the Division of Clinical Pathology by evaluating and rendering interpretation and diagnoses for hematology specimens and by performing bone marrow biopsy procedures.

Position Responsibilities

The Department of Pathology, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine/VCU Health System is seeking a full-time Hematopathologist. Academic rank is Assistant or Associate Professor commensurate with experience. This individual will instruct medical students, participate in the training of pathology residents and hematology fellows, and actively participate in the strong academic interactions of the VCU Massey Cancer Center Multi-disciplinary Hematology Malignancy and Bone Marrow Transplant programs. This faculty member will participate in a busy hematology laboratory, which includes sections for body fluids analysis, coagulation and a high volume bone marrow and lymph node diagnostic service. Clinical service commitment will comprise up to 75% of total effort. The preferred candidate will have experience in fostering collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers as well as serving as a resource to technologists at the bench.

Required Qualifications

M.D. degree with specialty training and certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology and board certification or board eligibility in Hematolopathology. Must be eligible for medical licensure in Virginia.
At the rank of Assistant Professor, the candidate should be able to demonstrate professional competence in the field of Hematopathology, a continuous record of clinical service activity, teaching experience and a strong interest and/or potential for scholarship. At the rank of Associate Professor, the performance of the candidate should indicate a progressive and sustained record of professional achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service, including teaching at a local or regional level, maturity and professional competence in independent scholarship, and creative contributions in administrative and/or clinical service.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

Specialty training and/or board certification in Molecular Pathology is preferred. Expertise in flow cytometry, and lymph node pathology is preferred.
