Description of the Job

The Graduate Assistant for Aquatics assists with the administration and management of all aquatics programming. This position encompasses a wide variety of personnel management, program administration, and program assessment and evaluation. This position assists in the supervision of the aquatic staff and reports to the Assistant Director for Aquatics.

Aquatics Programming:
• Assist with planning, coordinating, and managing the Learn to Swim program, certification classes, US Master’s Swimming programs, and aquatics-related special events.
• Assist in providing leadership and direction to departmental aquatics programming that supports student success.
• Assist with the creation and revision of policies and procedures for aquatics programming and informal recreation.
• Assist with the management of aquatics special programs.
• Regularly instruct swim lessons and certification classes based upon certifications to practice aquatic instructional skills and maintain professional competencies.

Personnel Management:
• Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of aquatics staff including Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguard Instructors, Water Safety Instructors, and US Master’s Swim Coaches.
• Assist in creating an environment that promotes and facilitates student learning and development.
• Assist in regularly monitoring staff time and verifying payroll.
• Assist in identifying partnerships to train and recruit new Water Safety Instructors, Lifeguards, Lifeguard Instructors, and US Master’s Swim Coaches.
• Assist in planning and conducting staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Provide regular morning, evening, and weekend supervisory coverage.

Risk Management:
• Assist with providing and implementing an effective risk management plan for those participating in aquatics programming or informal recreation.
• Assist with ensuring all staff maintain appropriate certifications required for their positional duties.
• Assist with scheduling certification classes and/or provide instruction in First Aid, CPR/AED, Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor courses for employees based upon certifications.
• Conduct regular risk management audits of activities, facilities, and equipment and report work order needs to the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator or Facilities Equipment Coordinator.

Program Promotion/Public Relations:
• Assist with the development of strategies to publicize and promote aquatics programming and aquatic facility usage for informal recreation.
• Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Aquatics and Assistant Director for Marketing & Communications to create marketing and promotional materials for aquatic programs.
• Actively participate in the promotion of the aquatics program by staffing outreach events.

Fiscal/Statistical/Database/Equipment Management:
• Assist with identifying, implementing, and utilizing appropriate assessment and program evaluation strategies to inform policy and procedural decision-making, programming, facility operations, and resource allocation.
• Conduct regular equipment inventories, research new equipment, and acquire equipment following established procurement guidelines.
• Assist with the development and management of annual budgets for aquatics programming.

General Administration:
• Participates in the Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.
• Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-services, and other divisional or departmental meetings.
• Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives, programs, and committees as required.
• Collaborate with other university departments in support of the university’s academic mission.
• Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects, annual goals and objectives, and annual reports.
• Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a campus recreation professional.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Aquatics.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field
• Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University
• Must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
• Must currently possess at least one of the two certifications: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and/or American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, AED and First Aid certifications.

Preferred:

• Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting.
• Experience in supervising student employees.
• Strong knowledge in all aspects of aquatics: lifeguarding, swim lessons and swim team.
• Instructor level certifications (First Aid, CPR/AED, Lifeguard Instructor).
• Trainer level certifications (WSI-T or LGI-T).
• Certified Pool Operator, or working knowledge of pool chemicals and pump room operations

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:
● Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting.
● Previous experience with Fusion, WhenToWork and Google Drive.
● Experience in supervising student employees.
● Strong knowledge in all aspects of aquatics: lifeguarding, swim lessons and swim team.
● Instructor level certifications (First Aid, CPR/AED, Lifeguard Instructor).
● Trainer level certifications (WSI-T or LGI-T).
● Certified Pool Operator, Aquatics Facility Operator, or working knowledge of pool chemicals and pump room operations.

Additional Information

POSITION:
This position consists of a 20 hours/week on average, nine-month (August – May) graduate assistantship, which may be renewed for a second year based upon performance review as well as a required overload position participating in the Recreational Sports Facilities Weekend On-Site Supervision schedule, which will not exceed 9 hours/week on average. The start date for this position is August 1, 2017.

SALARY:
• Full VCU tuition and fee waiver, not to exceed $24,000 annually
• $9,000 stipend paid in bi-monthly installments for a nine-month appointment from August – May.
• • $15 per hour for weekend Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Weekend Supervision Rotation
• Hourly summer employment, at the rate of $15 per hour, available upon request
• $500 – $1,000 for professional development available annually depending upon need and requests.
