Description of the Job

The Graduate Assistant for Facility Operations assists with the administration and management of all Recreational Sports facilities including the Cary Street Gym, MCV Campus Recreation & Aquatic Center, Cary Street Field, and Thalhimer Tennis Center. This position encompasses a wide variety of personnel management, program administration, and program assessment and evaluation. This position assists in the supervision of the facility operations staff and reports to the Facility Operations Coordinator.

Personnel Management:
• Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of facility operations staff, including Service Attendants, Weight Room Attendants, and Facility Managers.
• Assist in creating an environment that promotes and facilitates student learning and development.
• Assist in planning and conducting training sessions and staff meetings.
• Assist in regularly monitoring staff time and verifying payroll.
• Identify partnerships to train and recruit new facility operations staff.
• Act as a standing member of the student development and recognition committee.

Facility Management:
• Assist in the management of daily operations of all Recreational Sports facilities, including supervision, risk management, policy enforcement, access control, and reporting of maintenance/housekeeping concerns.
• Assist in ensuring security of the facilities and activities by following opening and closing procedures, assisting with coordination of lost and found protocols, and documenting facility risk management concerns.
• Assist in resolving participant conduct problems according to department and University guidelines and procedures.
• Assist with ensuring consistent and quality service standards are met.
• Assist in the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures for Recreational Sports facilities.
• Assist with internal and external facility reservations and provide supervision of special events.
• Provide regular morning, evening, and weekend supervisory coverage.

Informal Recreation Programming:
• Assist with the creation and implementation of informal recreation activities, events, and programs.
• Assist with the identification, procurement, and maintenance of equipment to facilitate informal recreation opportunities.
• Assist with the creation and implementation of special events.
• Assist with the development of initiatives, policies, and procedures to promote and encourage informal recreation.

Risk Management:
• Assist in providing an effective risk management plan for Recreational Sports facilities and informal recreation.
• Assist in conducting risk management training and scenario audits.
• Ensure all staff maintain appropriate certifications required for their positional duties.
• Assist with conducting regular risk management audits of activities, facilities, and equipment and report work order needs to the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator or Facilities Equipment Coordinator.

Fiscal/Statistical/Database/Equipment Management:
• Assist with identifying, implementing, and utilizing appropriate assessment and program evaluation strategies to inform policy and procedural decision-making, programming, facility operations, and resource allocation.
• Conduct regular equipment inventories, research new equipment, and acquire equipment following established procurement guidelines.
• Assist with the development and management of annual facility operations budgets.

General Administration:
• Participate in the Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Supervision Rotation, including some nights and weekends.
• Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional or departmental meetings.
• Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives, programs, and committees as required.
• Collaborate with other university departments in support of the university’s academic mission.
• Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects, annual goals and objectives, and annual reports.
• Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a campus recreation professional.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Facility Operations.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Sport Administration, or related field
• Acceptance into the Graduate Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University
• Must maintain a 3.0 GPA
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• Demonstrated experience working in recreation facility management
• Demonstrate the willingness and ability to lead and learn
• Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and meet deadlines
• Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Demonstrated administrative skills in planning, implementing and evaluating programs; and risk management
• Demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development; ability to motivate and supervise staff
• Ability to lift and handle physical equipment set-ups for various activities

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working in a campus recreation setting
• National Personal Training certification by ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, or equivalent
• Experience in supervising student employees
• First Aid, CPR/AED Certification

Additional Information

• Full VCU tuition and fee waiver, not to exceed $24,000 annually
• $9,000 stipend paid in bi-monthly installments for a nine-month, 20-hour per week average appointment from August – May
• $15 per hour for weekend Recreational Sports Facilities On-Site Weekend Supervision Rotation
• Hourly summer employment, at the rate of $15 per hour, available upon request
• $500 – $1,000 for professional development available annually depending upon need and requests
