Description of the Job

The Office of Student Athlete Support Services employs approximately 40-50 tutors in nearly every major subject area each semester. VCU Rams Tutors promote academic success by helping student-athletes who are experiencing academic difficulty or need additional support to develop academic skills and course-specific knowledge.

Experienced tutors who have worked for VCU’s Student-Athlete Support Services for at least two semesters are eligible to apply for a promotion to the position of Lead Tutor.

Up to four Lead Tutors will be selected each year from those who apply. Lead Tutors will take on additional responsibilities including assisting with training, observing tutors, and developing resources or workshops for students. Lead Tutors will also be responsible for special projects and other duties as assigned by the Tutor Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

- Must have completed at least 40 credits.
- Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative undergraduate and/or graduate GPA.
- Be available to tutor a minimum of 12 hours a week.
- Must be able to complete up to 20-30 additional hours over the semester.
- Be comfortable with public speaking and facilitating instructional sessions.
- Be able to work with student-athletes from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Have excellent communication skills and a patient, encouraging attitude.
- Record accurate and thorough accounts of time spent completing various Lead Tutor duties.
