Position Summary and Qualifications

Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is to provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia, to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills, recreation and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research and outcome-focused patient care. The Department serves the needs of persons with disabilities through various grant and contract projects related to traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other disabilities, employment and work supports, disability benefits, and enrichment of quality of life.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This position is an entry to mid-level academic (i.e., Assistant or Associate Professor) position in the area of applied neurodegenerative disorders in the VCU Department of Physical Medicine. The incumbent for this position will be required to engage in the following activities as needed to ensure the success of the overall CENC mission: administration of Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (CENC) programs and associated personnel as directed by the Principal Investigator, aid in the writing and implementation of future research studies, design and implement various review panels and working teams, complete data analysis and quality assurance plans, assist in report production and the development of scholarly publications. The incumbent must be flexible in terms of working with scholars from various diverse backgrounds and personal circumstances and be capable of aiding in the development, design, coordination and implementation of a variety of funded research studies with CENC colleagues.

Position Responsibilities

Although the faculty member will have no direct teaching assignments (i.e., classes), it is expected that the incumbent will provide direct instruction as part of mentoring duties to CENC faculty, staff, and trainees as well as generally to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The incumbent for this position will be expected to: aid in the implementation of a broad array of research studies centered on neurodegenerative disorders, help design and implement data analysis plans, assist in required governmental report production and the development of scholarly publications, and facilitate activities to ensure the successful completion of research project as well as collaborate with CENC colleagues on application and execution of funded research projects.

The faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. The faculty member will also represent CENC actively at regional, national and international meeting and conferences

Other (for instance administrative duties, etc.)
Make regular site visits to confirm funded sites are on task with all deliverables; help provide assistance to sites that require technical assistance.

Required Qualifications

Eligible candidates must possess the following qualifications:
A doctoral degree in psychology, neuropsychology, or a closely related brain science field
Demonstrated ability to engage with a large and diverse peer group
Applied skills in neurodegenerative disorders including but not limited to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
A publication history in peer-reviewed journals
Demonstrated leadership skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a team oriented work style
An interest and/or background in applying analytic skills to rehabilitation and disability topics
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

It is also preferred that candidates possess:
Funding history or experience working on research projects with Federal agencies such as the NIH, NSF, VHA, and U.S. Department of Education, and Department of Defense
Familiarity with military culture and ethos
Collaborative research agenda including publications crossing lines of rehabilitation, physical medicine and neuroscience
